Holiday Survival Tip #5: Alternate Alcohol and H2O
Not only can the calories from wine, beer, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks end up around your waistline, they can also stop your body from burning fat, seriously derailing any weight loss efforts.
Yep, just like you, your body loves alcohol and prefers it over any other fuel source (protein, carbs, fat).
It takes about 48 hours for your body to metabolize those Margaritas you’ve just enjoyed, and during that time all fat-burning in your body stops, which can lead to stalled weight loss or even weight gain. If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t lose weight when you’re having a few glasses of wine or beer every night, this might be why.
The calories in alcoholic beverages have ZERO nutritional value, but they sure are a fun way to enjoy the holidays. So, to drink and be merry without doing damage to your waistline or metabolism:
- Have a glass or two of sparkling or plain water BETWEEN every glass of alcohol to cut the calories (and prevent a hangover, too)
- Dilute your drink with ice cubes or sparkling water
How about a vodka and seltzer with lime?
- Don’t drink on an empty stomach. Eat a little protein before you drink
- Choose wisely:
Vodka, tequila, gin, whiskey (distilled liquor): about 100 calories per1.5 ounces
Wine: Red or white about 160 calories per 5 ounces
Sweet wines will have a higher sugar content and more calories
Champagne: 100 calories per 3.4 ounces
Cognac: 105 calories per 1.5 ounces
Cocktails: Lots of calories! Watch out for added juices, sugars, and syrups
Beer: About 150-170 calories per 12 ounces
Hard cider: 150 calories per 12 ounces
Your waistline (and probably your head) will thank you in the morning.
